The Colonial Theatre is pleased to present The Taming of the Shrew in our tenth season of Shakespeare- To- Go. Shakespeare’s exciting and multi-layered comedy will be featured in this very popular and effective educational outreach program. The Taming of the Shrew will travel to schools across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with performances scheduled during the school week from April 29th – May 10th, 2013. If there is a need, the performance schedule will be extended.
Our Shakespeare-To-Go program features a top-notch professional cast of actors who bring a 50-55 minute adaptation of a Shakespeare play into the schools, performed in an interactive style with a demonstration/question-and-answer period following the presentation. This early and dynamic engagement with the material arouses the interest and excitement of the students and introduces them to Shakespeare’s language, themes, and varied performance styles.
Not only is their knowledge increased, their interest and curiosity are stimulated. Students become more inclined to read these and other literary works, as they will have had the engrossing experience of watching Shakespeare’s words come alive right before their eyes, in their own schools. The exposure to Shakespeare in this setting helps to increase the accessibility of the plays, and keeps the subject matter lively and exciting. The Shakespeare- To-Go play is also the same piece that is chosen for full-scale performance at the Colonial Theatre Shakespeare Festival each summer.
This year’s offering, Taming of the Shrew is among Shakespeare’s best known and most oft taught works and is sure to be an event of lasting value for your students. Taming of the Shrew is the story of headstrong Kate being wooed by the fortune seeking Petruchio and the basis of the Tony Award winning musical Kiss Me Kate. It is a tale of comedy, rivalry and true love.
Shakespeare-To-Go is a unique and valuable opportunity for students of all ages, designed to encourage an interest and life-long enthusiasm for literature and learning. We hope to stimulate their imagination and arouse their interest in the value of the arts as a facet of everyday life. If requested, we also provide the schools with study materials and programs prior to our scheduled performance, giving teachers additional chance to prepare the students for the play, and to partner with us in an interactive learning program.
The cost is $500 per performance. If this fee is partially or wholly out of your reach, please let us know. We have an active scholarship program, and it is our goal that no interested school be turned away. I hope that we will have the pleasure of bringing our exciting program to your school, and we look forward to hearing from you soon. Reserve your space today!
